4 Tips to Discover Utrecht's Art Scene
When you are new in town, finding the best spots to eat, shop, dance and relax can feel like a daunting task. Figuring out what the best place is to discover art can seem even more complicated! Utrecht does not only have wonderful museums, such as Centraal Museum and Museum Catherijne Convent, there are actually also many hidden gems. Young Collectors Circle will help you find them!
Tip 1: HKU
Every year, the graduating art students of the HKU Fine Art department present their work during a week-long exhibition in the Pastoe factory. Not only will you find the talents of the future there, but you can also enjoy the many cool bars and restaurants that have popped up around the academy in recent years.
Tip 2: Galleries
Utrecht may not be known for its gallery scene, but there are quite a few amazing galleries. Take for instance kunsthandel Meijer, where you can find works of art from the modern era. Moving Gallery is a gallery that represents young talent and Sanaa Gallery focuses on artists from the African diaspora. To name a few!
Tip 3: Project Spaces
Are you interested in the relationship between art and society? There are a number of spaces that focus on art that is reflective and critical of today's world. Pay a visit to BAK, CASCO or Fotodok to join the dialogue!
Tip 4: Young Collectors Festival
Another great way to get to know the local art scene is the Young Collectors Festival. On Saturday, August 28 from 1:30-6PM, the second edition will take place around the theme Art is Everywhere. Learn all about art in public space during a masterclass, take a look behind the scenes in the studios of Utrecht based artists such as Eva Spierenburg and Ricardo van Eyck, discover the story behind iconic works of art in prominent locations all over the city as told by the artists such as Boris Tellegen (DELTA) and Cecilia Rebergen, and finish with a guided tour of an impressive open-air exhibition at city lab RAUM. The festival consists of 10 different routes, which will take you to various places in the city.
